Autism affects around one in a hundred people in Wales. Despite increased recognition as a condition many professionals working with young people between the ages of 16-25 may still be unable to recognise the difficulties encountered by autistic people and may be unaware of how they can best offer practical support during the critical transition stages of childhood to adult life.
Wilst plenty of information is made available on the needs of younger autistic children in Wales the needs of older adolescents, particularly in relation to education, often go unaddressed with many people unsure of the provision available for those moving from adolescent to adult services.
If you are a professional working with young autistic adolescents you will now be able to benefit from a free informative workshop which will increase your awareness of autism as a condition and shed light on some of the common issues faced.
The workshop will also provide practical strategies for classroom management together with behavioural and social management techniques allowing you to better meet the needs of young autistic people. In addition the sessions, led by professionals in the field of autism, will address the problems faced during the development stages from childhood to adult life, the need for structure, continuity and routine, the development of transferable life skills. There will also be an overview of the post-16 educational provision available at Beechwood College in Sully near Cardiff.

The transition into adulthood can be a challenging time for many adolescents. For the majority of parents, support networks are plentiful and may include friends, family, school teachers or even magazines. However for parents of young adolescents on the Autistic Spectrum, the transition from school to independent living is complex and challenging and can seem a daunting and stressful prospect.
There is much emphasis placed on the needs of young autistic children in Wales but unfortunately the needs of adolescents often go unaddressed leaving many parents uncertain as to the options available for their teenage sons and daughters who may wish to continue their education after the age of sixteen to develop social relationships, skills and occupational interests.
This free workshop will enable you to find out about the options available for your son or daughter between the ages of 16-25 as they develop into adulthood.
