Admissions Process
Beechwood takes a positive view on visits from prospective parents and students and representatives of placing authorities at any time by prior arrangement. All visitors can meet the College Principal, Head of Care and other staff team members so that they can get the most from their visit and make an informed choice about a possible placement.
Prospective new students will generally be identified to Beechwood College in one of two ways:
- Following initial enquiries and assessment by a social worker or other authority, primary care trust or school.
- Following direct enquiries by a parent, relative, friend or, in some cases, the person needing care and education.
The exact procedure may vary depending upon the circumstances of each student and often the urgency with which the admission is required. However, generally the procedure is as follows:
- Initial contact by social service department, parents or relatives, education or health authorities
- Information is supplied by Beechwood on college values, education and recreation facilities, details about care and staffing and general location of the College
- Arrange an assessment visit to prospective students at home or school, as appropriate, by a member(s) of the staff team
- Arrange for prospective student to visit Beechwood College to see facilities and meet other students and staff.
- Final planning meeting and an offer of a place at the College is made in writing to the authority and an admission date agreed
- Comprehensive transition work is then carried out by staff from Beechwood College. Immediately, work begins on the allocation of the key working team, an initial assessment and the drawing up of care plans in conjunction with the student, social worker, relative and significant others if appropriate. Review dates are set, the admission check list is completed and Final Admission Procedures are followed.
- Admission for every student is on a trial basis for initial assessment and acclimatisation before and on-going placement is agreed.
